![]() ![]() Hello! It looks like you're new to our sub. That doesn't really benefit us or you, so I'd dig alittle deeper if I were you into what could happen if things don't go to plan, bc in the military things almost never go to plan. I know a lot of salty maintainers who wanted to be something else but due to various circumstances(couldn't meet training req, could not attain a TS clearance, etc) they found themselves in a critically manned career field that they aren't interested in at all. Jobs aren't guaranteed in the air force as you could wash out into another career field, then you have to ask yourself if you'd be willing to do the next available job that they offer you, and if you'd be willing to do it without the bonus bc you'll probably lose that too if you wash out of your original AFSC. ![]() I would ask more questions, learn what your AIT/Tech schools will be like, the attrition rates, what could happen if you wash out, etc. I dont know about the army, but I'm pretty sure air force crypto linguist has one of the highest if not the highest attrition rates of all AFSC tech schools. Qualifying for the MOS/AFSC or for cat IV languages is not an issue.) (Note: I've taken both the ASVAB and DLAB and passed both with great scores. Tl dr - Is life in the Army really that much worse than the Air Force? Is an AF crypto job worth the tradeoffs? But what does quality of life actually mean? Nicer barracks? Better leadership? Less BS? All/none of the above? And is it really worth the longer contract, fewer neat opportunities, smaller bonus, and non-guaranteed job? But my whole family and most other people I have talked to tell me to go Air Force, again, for the quality of life. Is my assessment even accurate? The Army seems like the clear winner in terms of almost everything. Of course nearly everything I've stated is speculation and what I've been able to gather from scouring the web. And I've also heard the re-enlistment bonuses for linguists are pretty great, if that's the plan at the end of the first contract. There's also the fact that the 5 year contract provides an earlier escape if it really is that unbearable. But there would be more variety in terms of unit assignment and they'd be able to to more "cool" stuff and be able to volunteer to attend schools and try out for the Ranger regiment if they really need something more. Sleeping in the mud and eating MREs every once in a while sounds kinda fun.įrom what I hear, Army linguists, on the other hand, may find themselves doing stuff completely unrelated to crypto depending on where they are stationed, especially while in garrison. I'm young and in good shape I'd hate to work a desk job all day every day with little opportunity for much else. ![]() However, I've also heard that they tend to get stationed in Nebraska for a good chunk of their careers, don't generally deploy and don't get many opportunities to do 'military' stuff or attend interesting schools like airborne or ranger. The impression I get is that an Air Force linguist would get to do the job they were trained to do almost on the daily, which is certainly a plus. My main reservations with the Air Force are the possibility of not getting a linguist slot and the lack of variety and opportunities if I do get a slot. However, nearly every person I've talked to about it has told me that I should go Air Force in spite of the technically worse contract because of the quality of life the AF has to offer. The only real tangible pro I can think of for the Air Force is the CCAF. On paper, the Army contract just seems straight up better than anything the Air Force has to offer. The Air Force, on the other hand, would set me up with a 6 year contract and a ~$20,000 bonus IF I even get selected to be a linguist. I've made the decision to join the military as a cryptologic linguist, but I can't choose between the Army and the Air Force.įrom what I understand, I'd be looking at a 5 year contract with a ~$35,000 bonus with the Army (which I'm all but certain is even higher now I got this figure from a recruiter back in January of this year) and a 35P slot guaranteed. I recently posted this question on r/army, and figured I may as well post it here as well to get some more opinions. ![]()
